North Star Roller Derby is excited to announce that we will be part of Give to the Max Day, Minnesota’s annual epic giving holiday. #GTMD18 takes place Nov. 15, but early giving is already underway.

To make this amazing day of giving even better, we’ll be broadcasting a Give-a-Thon Derb-a-Thon live on our Facebook page, Nov. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. It will be a black and white scrimmage starring all your favorite skaters and officials, plus fun interviews, skill demos, trivia, and more.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Give to the Max Day was first started in 2009. This event launched a webpage, GiveMN.org, where folks can search for their favorite nonprofits, or discover new ones, and support them through donations. To date, more than 300,000 donors have given over $200 million through Give to the Max Day events and fundraisers.
Our new non-profit status lets your favorite Minneapolis roller derby league be a part of the greater giving community, and boy, are we lucky to be here. North Star Roller Derby is completely fueled by the time and efforts of its members and big-hearted volunteers.
North Star Roller Derby’s Mission
North Star Roller Derby’s main focus is athleticism and the empowerment of women and non-binary athletes, both on and off the track. As a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), North Star Roller Derby advocates for the growth of roller derby in Minnesota and throughout the world.
We are is a community of driven athletes, strong souls, and people hailing from your very own neighborhoods. These amazing people who find their home in our league are your teachers, doctors, scientists, writers, musicians, and more. And each person pumps countless hours into making this kooky idea of playing a sport with wheels on your shoes work.
When we aren’t smashing into each other on the track, you can find us around Minneapolis and beyond, volunteering our time to local charities, events that need a helping hand, Minneapolis Pride, and beyond.
Where Every Penny Goes
Our league is fueled by every person in our league. Each person pays their own way, from monthly dues to gear and jerseys, even travel costs. We also rely on our members and volunteers to operate the league every single day. We do all this so we can share the sport that we love and provide this affordable, family-friendly entertainment to the people of our community.
A donation to our league this #GTMD18 goes a long way toward things like these:
- Holding bouts and tournaments for anyone to come and enjoy
- Rental costs of our practice space, the place we call home and hang our skates
- Advertising and printing costs to help us spread the derby word
- Recruiting efforts so even more people can find their good place here
- Travel expenses (our travel team skaters and volunteers can spend thousands each year, out of pocket, to help improve our league’s global rankings in inter-league competitive play)
